Any good yoga poses for people with lymphedema?

I have lymphedema. Lymphedema is not draining a lot especially around in the abdominal area. Are there some good yoga poses for drainage of lymphedema? I'm going to yoga from time to time, but I prefer to try a few yoga poses in my free time at work.

Exercises For a Lymphoedema Arm

Lymphoedema arm is often seen as a side effect resulting from breast cancer surgery. Breast cancer survivors sometimes complain of a heaviness or swelling of the arm on the side that has undergone the surgery. Although it may not be a very critical condition, the patient may have to deal with the problem all her life. The basic definition of lymphedema says that it is a condition where there is abnormal pooling of the lymphatic fluid due to the malfunctioning of the lymph vessels due to injury or shock.

Breast cancer treatment usually means the removal of the lymph nodes or lymph vessels. This causes an injury to the lymphatic system, obstructing the smooth flow of fluids in the body and may ultimately lead to a pooling of lymph fluid. A swelling may be present in the wrist or hand, while sometimes there may be a swelling above the elbow or in the breast area itself. Although it is impossible to judge whether every breast cancer survivor will experience lymphedema arm condition, it is prudent to take precautions to lessen the chances of developing it.

Continuous research in the field of lymphedema is being carried out and the new findings are challenging the old beliefs. In the past, exercise was said to worsen the condition, but now it appears as if exercise may be good for those suffering from lymphedema arm symptoms. According to research by the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, gentle weightlifting may help to keep arm lymphedema in check. A slowly progressive weight lifting program under the supervision of a trained fitness professional is being recommended for breast cancer survivors. It is absolutely crucial for such patients to learn the proper technique to do the exercise and wear the compression garments at all times during the exercise.

Simpler forms of exercise like pole walking gives the entire body a workout. Arm exercises ensure that your arm gets the flexibility and muscle control and assist in lymph circulation in the body. A few general precautions can be taken to prevent the symptoms of lymphoedema arm condition. Wear a sunscreen to prevent sunburn; using insect repellent when you work outdoors is advisable. It is necessary to protect the hands from cuts and nicks by wearing gloves while doing gardening or housework. Skincare is of the utmost importance to prevent infection. A regular cleansing and moisturizing of the skin is a must for patients with lymphedema. If you notice any signs of infection, you must visit the doctor immediately to start treating it and avoid further complications.

    Lymphedema And Exercise

    Lymphedema and exercise are partners. The management of lymphedema needs to always include exercise. The muscle and joint movement stimulation during exercise increases the lymphatic flow. After breast surgery the general consensus for decades was for the patient to be gentle in regaining the use of the affected arm and be very careful not to lift. Through better means of using a sentinel node biopsy which affects fewer lymph nodes, it is now being reported that lymphedema exercise is very useful in restricting swelling. There is now a better understanding of the lymphatic system and how to control swelling through research. Exercise for lymphedema has been proven to be beneficial in assisting the swollen lymph nodes to drain away from the affected site. The drainage from the lymph nodes during exercise flows through the body and is removed as waste from the kidneys.

    Resistance exercises are receiving preliminary approval for helping with lymphedema treatment. The muscle contractions during resistance exercises increase the pumping action that moves fluid back to the chest and decreases swelling in the affected lymph nodes. The deep breathing associated with strength training exercises also stimulates lymphatic activity and improves and increases drainage away from the site. It is usually advised by your physician to wear a compression garment during any lymphedema exercises. The garment gives the affected area the compression needed to restrict swelling. Water exercises keep compression on the affected areas. Because of this, it is not essential to wear a compression garment while doing water exercises. Lymphedema exercising helps to control uncomfortable swelling.
