The fundamentals of the lymphatic system, lymphatic drainage
The lymphatic system is one of the most important systems of our body. Good functioning lymphatic system is essential to the body's ability to detoxify, nourish and regenerate tissues, filter metabolic waste and inorganic materials and maintain a healthy immune system.
The lymphatic system is parallel to the circulatory system. Unlike the system circulatory system in which the heart works as a pump to circulate the blood, lymphatic system has no pump to circulate lymph. In contrast, vessels nodes contain small muscles or lymphangions (little hearts), the contract of consecutive sections of the vessels to assist the movement of lymph in the vessels peristaltic effect (peristalsis – wave of involuntary contraction passing along the walls of a hollow structure, such as the esophagus or intestines and go to content before).
The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is important for our health and wellbeing. Lymph circulates in the blood white fight infection and contribute to the production of antibody – crucial in supporting the immune system. In addition to white blood cells, Hormones are transported throughout the body via the lymph.
Fatigue, stress, inactivity and / or trauma impede lymphatic flow. This jeopardizes the functioning waste of cell metabolism (toxins), which accumulate and become vulnerable to possible changes disease.
Lymphatic drainage is a light, rhythmic, manual therapy used to increase circulation of lymph in the body. This technique uses a repetitive motion subtle pumping in hand, the skin moves in the direction of flow of lymph (most of the lymphatic system just below the skin). The skin stretching stimulates lymphangions to use more often, improving the lymphatic circulation. Lymphatic drainage is performed in a manner precise to enable the lymphatic circulation, which in turn reduces the congestion of tissues and stimulates the immune system. Lymphatic system may be increased six to ten times the normal rate after a single session of lymphatic drainage.
This technique has been used since the 1930s and is a common practice in Europe. Now, winning recognition in the United States, is usually prescribed for women after a mastectomy to reduce lymphedema and is reimbursed by many insurance companies. Lymphatic drainage is an excellent complement to any type of surgery because it reduces inflammation (sometimes within minutes of treatment) decreases the healing time (increases circulation and brings more of the ingredients for the healing of the incision), and good healing improved. Lymphatic drainage can be performed 24 hours after surgery.
In addition to lymphatic drainage, drinking a lot water, healthy eating, deep abdominal breathing and exercise are ways to support the lymphatic circulation. Each time a muscle contracts, rubbing against the muscle of many lymphatic vessels, stimulating contraction. Yet another reason exercise is so good for us!
Lymphedema vs. Edema
Edema is swelling due to excess fluid in the tissues. Edema is common ground on the site physical injuries (sprained ankle for instance) among pregnant women and people represent a large portion of their workday. Swelling of the feet or leg generally better when the person sits down and puts his feet.
Early symptoms are similar to lymphedema swelling regular. However, lymphedema is a condition in which a protein-rich fluid accumulates in the tissues. Normally, the protein molecules Leave arterioles and in the interstitial space (space between cells). Protein molecules are too large to be reabsorbed by the veins and lymphatic system healthy, protein-rich fluid is reabsorbed by the lymphatic vessels and travels through the lymphatic system, filtered by lymph nodes and yields possibly lymphatic fluid in the circulatory system. However, a danger lymphatic system may be able to absorb the liquid. Protein attracts water, so the longer it takes the lymphatic system to "pump" fluid rich in proteins … more fluid is called the protein and more swelling.
Lymphedema is a disease and, if untreated, has a negative impact on health. Unchecked, inflammation due to the increase in lymphedema, to produce members of an elephant. Finally, the inflamed tissue becomes fibrotic, hardened, it say to further reduce the operational node. In extreme cases, doctors suggested amputation of the limb.
Treatment if lymphedema is a complete therapy decongestant (also known as complex treatment decongestant), which consists of lymphatic drainage, bandaging the affected limb, exercise and skin care impeccable.
A session always starts with lymphatic drainage in the neck. There is a high concentration lymph nodes in the neck and lymph vessels are closest to his chest area. So we always start by treating the neck and shoulders – to stimulate lymph nodes and right and left lymphatic vessels. After the neck, the general session, would move to the affected area, most often Member of lymphedema. A series of light taps with the movement direction of the lymph must flow. Lymphatic drainage starts growing near the trunk of the body and work along the blade (top) using a "drain" process. Result stimulates the lymphatic vessels closer to the body to begin cleaning. As the body treatment, the vessels treated initially more able to deal with traffic congestion of vessels in the lower extremity.
When lymphatic drainage is complete, the affected limb sold with short-stretch bandages. These dressings differ from ordinary Ace bandage, which applies constant pressure. Elastic bandages should never be used in the treatment of lymphedema. Bandage short stretch has an active and a resting phase, so do not apply continuous pressure, as the Ace bandage. The resting phase is important for healthy circulation.
The bandage is an essential part of treatment. Once the area was treated with lymphatic drainage, a little liquid has moved and the swelling is slightly less. Bandages pressure on the fabric to help prevent further accumulation of fluid and help the existing fluid resorption. These bandages are left in a minimum of one night and, ideally until the next visit to the therapist. If possible, clients learn to sell and can not re-apply the bandages after a shower or bath. If you leave a bandage, the risk is high that the swelling stage of new treatment. According bandage alone can help reduce the swelling of lymphedema.
Customers must participate in their own therapy, do some simple movement exercises. The lifting of the affected limb, circling easy with the arm or leg, bending the knee or elbow are simple, but emotional "exercises" to stimulate the lymphatic flow. Deep diaphragmatic breathing is also important. In addition, customers should be particularly careful with your skin. The skin of lymphedema clients can be very sensitive and prone to infections and injuries. Great care must be used to protect the skin. Important Skin Care includes a hypoallergenic moisturizer.
In severe cases such as this is not an extended period, customers should consult a therapist lymphedema lymphatic 5 days per week lymphatic drainage and bandaging. In Europe, customers are twice a day.
With a continuum of care and respect the right customer, lymphedema can be effectively treated and reduced.

Natural Help for drainage through the lymph node removal (post-mastectomy lymphedema)?
My grandmother had her lymph nodes with her mastectomy and post-mastectomy has evolved away along lymphedema. Her left arm is very swollen with fluid. She was told to try massage and, it increases. I've been looking for "natural" way to help her with this. I know that grapefruit oil will help with the fluid structure, and I saw in this forum say that castor oil to help with swollen lymph nodes. I wonder if castor oil could be used as a carrier oil. If these with its drain as it helps for the swollen lymph nodes? There are also mixtures are more effective than grapefruit alone? If so, what are the amounts used should be?
Use the castor oil as a carrier with grapefruit oil (test a small amount of grapefruit oil first for sensitivity or an allergic Reaction, 4 – 10drops) The massage is the cheapest and oils would help immensely. As you said keep the arm raised over her Heartline would be most benficial and wore a customized compression sleeve or elastic bandage can help prevent accumulation of more liquid. Exercise is of paramount importance is for drainage and the doctor to explain what. And reduce salt intake.
